Intuitive Modeling

Integrated structure wizards

For high-rise buildings, multiple stories and floor diaphragms can be automatically generated. For conventional building types, the building generation wizard can be used to generate the entire model. The wizards eliminate the need for repetitive and tedious modeling steps that cumulatively lead to significant amounts of time being expended. These wizards are of particular for projects that contain structures that are comprised of many elements and complex geometry.

Building Wizard

midas Gen has various structure wizards to expedite the modeling of structures. For example, you may use the Arch Wizard to create an arch without having to individually model each member. Instead, you simple need to enter parameters such as total arch length, segments spacing, and curvature. The program will then automatically generate the arch for you based on the parameters you entered. The same functionality applies to the wizards that generate frame, beam, truss, and column structures.

Various Material and Section Properties

midas Gen provides SPC, which calculates stiffness data for any shape or form. The section shape can be drawn, or a DXF file can be imported. The shape and properties of the generated section can be exported to midas Gen.

  Section Property Calculator

midas Gen contains the material and section database of ASTM, AISC, CISC, CSA, BS, DIN, EN, UNI, IS, JIS, GB, etc. User-defined material and section data can be also implemented.

Nodal Masses

Lumped Translational Mass/Rotational Mass Moment of Inertia are specified at a particular node, or previously defined nodal masses are modified or deleted.

Floor Diaphragm Masses

Methods of specifying floor mass data

Loads to Masses

Vertical components (loads acting in the -Z direction of GCS) of the entered loads are converted into masses, which are entered as concentrated mass data.

Consistent Mass

Convert into distributed masses. Consistent Mass is calculated with the shape function used to derive the stiffness matrix. Off-diagonal mass terms are considered and, unlike the lumped mass, the inertia coupling effect is considered. Therefore, results using the consistent mass  is more accurate than the lumped mass, however it takes more time for numerical computation.

Self-weight to Mass

The masses of the elements included in the model can be automatically converted into lumped masses or consistent masses in midas Gen for dynamic analysis or computation of statically equivalent seismic loads.

  Mass Data

Serviceability of a floor structure can be evaluated by time history analyses. midas Gen provides a number of time history forcing functions for walking loads for floor vibrations.Various response spectrums can be extracted from the seismic database and applied to response spectrum analyses. Design response spectrums can be also auto-generated in accordance with the design standards. The built-in design spectrum types are as follows:

IBC2000, UBC, NBC, Eurocode-8, China, IS1893, Taiwan, Japan, Korea.

The self-weight of a structure and its loadings can be auto-converted into masses for an eigenvalue analysis. By performing response spectrum analysis, excitation angle of response spectrum is automatically taken as the major-axis direction of a building. Also accidental eccentricity moment can be automatically included in the calculation of response spectrum loads.

  Dynamic Load

midas Gen provides complete load types. Static load can be assigned as self weight, nodal load, beam load, floor load, plane load, prestress load, temperature load, pressure load, wind load, static seismic load, etc.
